Ms.DeGroot's Classroom Management Plan

Traffic Light

System

I will implement a Traffic Light system in my classroom in order to discipline students who are being disruptive in class and misbehaving.

Non-Disruptive Behavior such as daydreaming or talking out of turn can be controlled by less active means:

  • proximity control: I will cirulate the classroom in order to maintain control. Students are less likely to act out if I am near them.
  • Pause during instruction and use 'the look'.
  • Say the students name
  • Tap the students desk

Disruptive Behavior can be categorized on three different levels:

  • Level 1: name calling, teasing, purposeful exclusion, and swearing.
  • Level 2: spitting, pinching, biting, hitting, kicking, tripping, and disrespecting authority by talking back, arguing, and lying.
  • Level 3: punching, fighting, stealing, vandalising, or putting others in serious danger.

Level 1 and 2 behavior will be handled using the Traffic Light System. Level 3 behavior requires immediate removal from the classroom, the student will be sent to the office to so that the other students will remain calm and safe and the problem can be dealt with privately.

The Traffic Light system is a way to monitor behavior, while providing a visual reminder of the immediate goal so that students can take charge of their actions. ESL students will benefit from this system because it is clear, simple, and easy to understand.

A large visual of a traffic light will be displayed on the board. Each students name will be written on a magnet that will move depending on the student's behavior.

Students will receive a calendar each month. Students will color their calendar squares either green, yellow, or red based on where their magnet is at the end of each day. This will allow both the teacher and the student to take note and keep track of the students behavior throughout the month. The calendar will be placed in the "do" section of their folders so that their parents can monitor their behavior and communicate any concerns they may have about their child's behavior with me.

  • Green: Students will begin each morning with their magnet on the green section of the traffic light. This means that they are working well with others, remaining focused throughout the lesson, and contributing to a positive classroom atmosphere. Students will remain on green with one nonverbal warning and one verbal warning.
  • Yellow: after students have received both a nonverbal warning and a verbal warning on green students will be asked to move their magnet to the yellow section of the traffic light. Students who are asked to move their magnet to yellow must discuss their behavior with their teacher at recess.
  • Red: If inappropriate behavior continues students will be asked to move thier magent to the red section of the traffic light. Students will receive a note to take home to have their parents sign describing their behavior and what can be done to move towards behaviors that would contribute to a more positive classroom atmosphere.
  • If disruptive behavior continues past the red light the student will be sent to the office for further discussion and a phone call home.
