Ms.DeGroot's Classroom Management Plan

The B.U.G. Incentive Program

In order to encourage good behavior in my classroom I will implement the B.U.G. (Being Unusually Good) Incentive program to reinforce positive behaviors. The goal of this program is to place the student in charge of his or her behavior. Students will be recognized for exceptional behavior. Other students will take note of this and be motivated to earn a bug as well. Students who have mastered skills and follow directions will be given a bug.

  • For example, I might say, "Wow, look at Katie sitting criss-cross applesauce on the rug! Her eyes are watching, her ears are listening, her hands are still, and her feet are quiet. I can tell that she is ready to listen to our story this morning. Thank-you Katie, you earned a bug this morning!"

After a student has collected five bugs, he or she may pick a prize from my prize bin. In order to promote a love for school I will reward my students with prizes that contribute to more learning such as pencils, erasers, bookmarks, short stories, etc.

Members of a small group may receive a bug for working cooperatively together as well.

  • For example, I might say, "Group 3 is working well together on their project. They are staying on task and cooperating with one another. Good-job group 3, you earned a bug!"

After a small group has collected five bugs, that group will earn special priveleges such as presenting their findings first or lining up for lunch or end of the day dismissal first.

The entire class may receive a bug for being a good audience or staying on task to copmlete daily goals.

  • For example, I might say, "Class I could tell that you were focused, and working hard today. Thank-you for participating and behaving, you earned a bug!"

The whole class will work to collect bugs throughout the semester for special days such as field trips to museums, parks, or pajama reading days.
